DOORS > COMPOSITE DOORS

Why Choose Composite?

A composite door is more than just an entrance; it is a meticulously engineered barrier designed to protect your home while enhancing its curb appeal. Unlike standard uPVC doors, our composite range features a 48mm-thick solid timber core—making them nearly 10% thicker than most competitors on the market. This results in a door that is not only visually stunning but incredibly thermally efficient and secure.

  • Solid to the Core: Featuring a 48mm solid timber core sourced from fully sustainable forests. This provides a natural thermal barrier and a substantial, "heavy" feel every time you close the door.
  • Weather-Proof Skin: Wrapped in a high-impact, Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) skin. This is the same material used for boat hulls, ensuring your door won’t fade, scratch, or peel—even in the toughest Yorkshire weather.
  • Bespoke Aesthetics: With over 20 colours available inside and out and a vast range of traditional and contemporary styles, your door can be as unique as your home.
  • Champion Security: Fitted with the Ultion 3-star cylinder as standard. These locks are "stay-locked" guaranteed, offering you and your family total peace of mind.

The Anatomy of a Solid Core:

At The Great Big Window Company, we believe in transparency. When researching doors, you will encounter two main types of composite construction: GRP Foam Core and Solid Core.

  • The Difference in Quality: Many mass-produced doors are 'GRP' doors. These consist of a foam core and a fibreglass skin that is often painted. While these are a cheaper entry point, the foam can lack structural mass, and the painted finish can deteriorate or chip over time.

  • Our Standard (Solid Core): We exclusively supply and install premium 'Solid Core' doors. These are engineered using a solid hardwood core with pre-coloured PVC skins that are 'colour-through'—meaning the colour is consistent all the way through the material, not just on the surface.

  • Why it Matters: By choosing an engineered hardwood core over foam, you are investing in a door that is significantly more durable, naturally more secure, and carries the physical weight and 'thud' of a high-quality entrance. We only sell the very best solid-core doors available, ensuring your investment lasts for decades.

Designing Your First Impression:

A door should reflect the character of the property. Whether you live in a traditional terrace or a modern detached home, the details matter:

  • Traditional vs. Contemporary: From the classic 'Ludlow' style to the sleek, minimalist 'Italia' collection, we help you match the architecture of your home.

  • The Hardware Suite: Choose from classic ironmongery for a heritage look or brushed stainless steel for a modern finish. Our handles and letterboxes are tested for salt-spray resistance to ensure they stay shining.

  • Glazing Artistry: Our decorative glass units are handcrafted and triple-glazed as standard, providing extra insulation and an easy-to-clean surface.
